Performance Sailing 2
The J80 – known for its speed, grace and simplicity – was built for 3 things: leisurely cruising with friends, performance racing, and good old fashioned fun on the water. Our Performance Sailing clinics are designed to give sailors a taste of all three.
The Pearson 26- a trusted and simple stepping stone towards larger cruisers, allows for an easy transition into Harbor cruising.
In the second part of the Performance Sailing series, we provide an in-depth introduction to the spinnaker, more opportunities to practice the advanced boat handling and sail trim topics covered in Performance Sailing 1, and include our Harbor Navigation course curriculum into 12 hours of class time. Conditions permitting, we typically head to the outer harbor to practice hoists, take-downs, and jibes. We review and practice how all of the various roles on the boat work together to make maneuvers possible (and safe). We also cover our Harbor Navigation curriculum so sailors are ready to leave the safety of the inner Harbor and explore the Harbor Isalndd while practicing their newfound boat handling skills.
Performance 2 curriculum includes:
- Review of J80 boat handling, sail trim and crew positions.
- Review of docking and anchoring under power
- Rigging and packing an asymmetrical spinnaker.
- Safely setting, flying, jibing, and dousing an asymmetrical spinnaker.
- Harbor Navigation
Mid-fleet Performance 2 is a two-day clinic that runs on a Saturday and Sunday from 10:00AM – 4:30PM with a 30-minute lunch break.
Recommended next steps:
- Join us for a Wednesday night racing on the J80s starting in May
- Performance Sailing 1
- J80 Membership
Things to note:
Performance Sailing 2 is a 2-day, 12-hour, course. It does not guarantee participants a spinnaker endorsement on the J80 or Navigation endorsement (green flag), which typically takes more time and practice than a 6-hour class can provide. More experienced students demonstrating a very strong command of spinnaker-handling and navigation may be granted endorsements on a case by case basis – but an additional check-out and completion of the green-flag test outside of the course is more typically required. A Mid-Fleet Cruising membership is not required but it would be necessary to reserve and skipper for a J80 or Pearson outside of class without it.
